The Game of Football

Football

The game of football is played on a field that is 120 yards long and 53 1/2 yards wide, with end zones and goal lines that are each 100 yards apart. Each side of the field is divided by yard lines, and the middle yard line is called the 50-yard line. The players start the game by placing the football on these “hash marks.” The “line of scrimmage” defines the side lines of the ball. The team that successfully moves the ball to the end zone will win.

Many people watch football games because it’s entertaining, and some teams form rivalries. Typically, teams from the same conference play each other in the Super Bowl, usually on the first Sunday of February. There are also many Super Bowl parties, which people throw to celebrate the game. Even those who don’t consider themselves football fans will probably watch the game. In addition to watching the game, companies use the game to debut new commercials. The Super Bowl is often the most watched sporting event of the year.

It’s possible that the game of football has been around since ancient times, although the English and French codes are the most prevalent. The earliest written reference to football dates to the 15th century, when Scottish schoolboys played “football” in Aberdeen. The word “pass” comes from the Latin phrase “huc percute pilam”, which means to strike. This definition is often confused with the modern concept of “passing the ball”.
