The Basics of Football

Football

Football is a team sport played by two teams of eleven players on a field. The main objective of the game is to score points by moving the ball towards the opponent’s goal. There are a number of ways to do this, such as through scoring a touchdown, kicking a field goal, or through an extra point.

Throughout history, many attempts have been made to ban or regulate football. King Edward III of England banned the game in 1363. However, in the 1870s, leading clubs started charging spectators and began to pay illicit wages to attract skilled players.

In the late 19th century, industrialization in Britain resulted in the formation of several urban institutions, including working-class football teams. This led to the development of modern football, which was tied closely to the growth of cities.

Modern football is played in leagues around the world, including the NFL and the Canadian Football League. Each team has a playbook of dozens to hundreds of plays.

Passing is the most common play. A quarterback (or offensive centre) throws the ball to running backs, receivers, or tight ends. Sometimes, a linebacker (or defensive back) may rush the quarterback.

Running with the ball is a less risky play than passing. The offensive line blocks the members of the defense and creates space for runners. If a player fumbles, he may be tackled and recover the ball. After recovering the ball, he runs until he is out of bounds.
